Wet weather did not dampen the spirits of those who attended yesterdays Honolulu Marathon Exposition. The four-day event ends today at five p.m.. Festivities were held at the Hawaii Convention Center and was free to the public. The exposition was surprisingly interesting. Just the buzz from the crowd was exciting. The world famous dancers of the Polynesian Cultural Center kept the atmosphere lively. Cultural demonstrations and performances awed the onlookers. Running legends Frank Shorter, Alberto Salazar, Greg Meyer, and Jim Ryun signed autographs and talked story with fans. Most popular of all, two time Olympic medalist. Yuko Arimori enthusiastically welcomed fans to her table. Her continuous smile brightened everyone’s day. A variety of food and drink were available in a spacious setting. They impressively displayed a multitude of past Honolulu Marathon photographs throughout the exposition. A body massage area was in constant use. Nike offered a tracking system for marathon participants. A constant line to register was present most of the day. If you missed the exposition, video is available to view.
Today, despite early morning southerly winds and showers, has become a welcomed sun bath. Many marathon participants came out in the predawn rain. Race day weather forecasts indicates a day much like today. Earlier in the week elite runners expressed doubt that any race records would be challenged if the weather remained wet. To be continued race day.
