Governor Vetoes Tax Hikes

Governor Lingle pummels Hawaii State Legislators for passing new taxes. Several hundred angry taxpayers listened as Hawaii’s Governor Linda Lingle explained that the Senate would have none of her logic. The legislature said they had no time to pass alternatives to taxes. Lingle pointed out the legislators did however have time to name a state insect.
The Governor vetoed three tax bills during the outdoor gathering at the State Capitol as the crowd erupted with cheer and chanted “VETO-VETO.” Lingle also vetoed another bill earlier in the day that increased taxes on tobacco.
Senate president Colleen Hanabusa said the Senate would override the vetoes during a special session. Governor Lingle urged taxpayers to present opinions to legislators immediately. The veto overrides could come in a day or two.
